Dora Karamanli
EPO Board of Appeal
A Greek national, Mrs Karamanli studied law at Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich. From April 1986 to March 1989 she was a legal trainee with the judicial authorities in Munich. After completing the second State Law Examination, she started her career as a lawyer at the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich in 1989. As from January 1994 she was responsible for substantive patent law (including biotechnology and computer-implemented inventions (CII)).
From 1 March 2006 to 1 September 2024 Mrs Karamanli was a judge at the Boards of Appeal at the EPO in Munich. She has made a significant contribution to various projects, such as the revision of the European Patent Convention (EPC) 2000 and the revision of the Rules of Procedure of the Boards of Appeal 2020. She regularly gives lectures and presentations on patent matters and EPO opposition and appeal proceedings. She contributed to the legal commentary Benkard, Europäisches Patentübereinkommen.
